11/16/13 Worthington Farm: Hiking the Battlefield on My Birthday :)

Girl Gone Hiking

What do I want for my birthday, more than anything else?

A sunrise hike.

Luckily, I was able to set out with Sidekick Pauli this morning to explore the trails on Worthington Farm, part of the Monocacy National Battlefield, in Frederick, Maryland.  Too bad Little Caesar had to work 😦 or she could have come too.  I got up early with Little Caesar…5:30 AM…because I wanted to make sure I would be able to get to the trail in time to see sunrise.  So I ate breakfast, fed the animals…yes, we still have the foster kittens, in addition to our 2 dogs and 4 other cats…drank my coffee really slow, and it was still dark!  When does it get light anyway?  At 6:45 AM I could see a sliver of dawn. Ahhh! Finally! I left my house with Sidekick Pauli in tow and headed down to Worthington Farm.

I parked…

my table. (and what I love about food.)

I want to say something about food.

Well, I want to say a lot of things.

And as always, I want to speak out of a place that recognizes my privilege. For one, to be able to sit in a comfy brown chair and write about it, and also, that I have the means to buy good ingredients, cook them, and feed myself and at times, others.

There is something to be said about sitting down at a table with plates with forks and maybe a few nice glasses. Maybe a cute napkin or some candles. Very similar to the picture at the top of this blog. It is a simple joy, that I can reproduce this from time to time. And really, it doesn’t take much.

But there’s something inside of me that gets excited when I know I am to be cooking for people I love and for…

NaNoWriMo: Because This Exists, and the World Needs Better

Rachel Peterson: writer. reader. occasional wanderer.

This November, I’m trying National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). 30 days, 50,000 words – that’s about 1,667 words per day. And I am terrified.

Generally, I write short form fiction and poetry. I’ve started countless novels, but they’re all currently lying about in various stages of abandonment. I have trouble finishing what I start, and I don’t know if it’s just because I don’t plan properly, or I get bored, or I don’t do enough research. But for one reason or another, I’ve never finished a novel. And I would really, really like to.

I owe this adventure mainly to a couple of very creative friends of mine. You can check out two of their blogs here and here. The point of NaNoWriMo is not to create a brilliant masterpiece or shining work of literary genius, although I’m sure some people will. It’s more about giving you the push…

You know what’s weird? Cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen – the sink is in the wrong place, the oven doesn’t seem to heat up just right, and none of my utensils, dishes or baking ware are around! Evan and I are currently living in temporary corporate housing until the end of the month, at which point we hope to be moved into our new house. In a way, it’s awesome because we didn’t have to rush to find a permanent place here in Richmond and it’s being paid for by his new company (which is probably most awesome of all). A month of free rent?! Yes, please! But what’s not awesome, is living out of moving boxes, not having all of the comforts of our own home and, for me in particular, having limited cooking supplies in the kitchen! I’m talking no vegetable peeler, no strainer, and only one knife!!…

District 12 vs. The Capitol

District 12 vs. The Capitol

I just have an insight into the marketing for Hunger Games, which I love.

Why is it that all of the marketing for this franchise centers around the Capitol. Capitol fashion and makeup and hair. Just a thought. You would think they might center around Katniss Everdeen, and not trying to promote this image of the Capitol, that only models in photo-shopped magazines can achieve.
